A user can tap every button correctly and still no A user can tap every button correctly and still not trust your product. The reason is rarely the interface.

Most design audits stop at layout, hierarchy, and flow. They skip the words sitting inside those flows entirely, as if language is decoration rather than infrastructure.

We tested that assumption directly. Alongside our partners at UXalliance and Bold Insight, we studied how users in Kenya and Tanzania read tone, phrasing, and meaning inside a mobile app. The pattern was consistent: when the language felt off, usability and trust dropped together, even when the design itself was sound.

That finding didn't stay contained to one app. It fed into the EPIC 2024 paper, "Decolonising LLMs: An Ethnographic Framework for AI in African Contexts," which asks the same question at the scale of AI systems: whose language, and whose assumptions are these models actually built on?

Design the interface all you want. If the language wasn't designed too, the experience wasn't either.
